MAY AND JUNE

MAY
We didn't have the best start to May at Aston Le Walls! Rosie jumped far too boldly into the first water and ended up catapulting me out of the saddle leaving me very wet and dirty!! I remounted and finished rather soggy. Blackie didn't feel himself xc resulting in me retiring.

Next stop was Ascott Under Wychwood where ESCADA II (5yo) was making her debut. She is a lovely new ride for me belonging to Andy Austin. I have had some fantastic rounds showjumping on her at BS winning money on most occasions including finishing 4th in a recent Newcomers. She has been with us a month and eventing is a very new concept. She produced a reasonable test but was a little wobbly in areas, scoring 35.5, she was unlucky to have the first fence down due to the minute size of it compared with what she has been jumping. Xc she was an absolute machine, sadly we exited the track into the ploughed field miles from the fence but the fence judge got over excited and gave me a refusal! I was thrilled with her first event and am seriously excited about her future.

Blackie then went to Farley Hall which is a fantastic new event in Berkshire. He was rather fresh in the dressage possibly due to a lack of warm up (jockey error) he then showjumped trying his heart out in the very holding ground and had 2 down. He absolutely flew round the huge, up to height xc course proving what a machine he is.

We popped to Croften Manor BSJA with Blackie, Rosie and Ethel on the 4th June. Ethel was unlucky to have 4 faults in the discovery and jumped fantastic in the Newcomers for 8 faults in the first half. This went up to 1m20 and she was seriously impressive for her age and experience. Blackie jumped a classy double clear in the Newcomers just missing out on the placings. Rosie had an annoying pole in the Newcomers and had a couple down in a massive foxhunter class. A very good educational day at the office.

We then headed to Summerhouse where Blackie had 4 faults in the newcomers, Ethel was 6th in the 1.05m open and 4th in the Newcomers and Orla was 5th in the Discovery and 4th in the 1.05m open.

Rosie was next at Nunney. This was a very sad event with the loss of Jordon MacDonald the day before. Thoughts with all his family and friends and also Benjamin Winter's following a tragic fall in Germany. Rosie i thought did a much improved test but the judge was less impressed!! She then lost all concentration showjumping and so I decided not to run her xc. I have now chosen to put Rosie in foal to a very handsome stallion. Mum and I have always wanted a foal from her and now seems like a great time with eventing being so expensive. We are chosing a stallion with longer legs and a better attitude to dressage!!

West Wilts was our next stop with no less that 5 horses leaving the yard. Thankfully Anya Thursby returned for the day to drive one of the two lorries and also to groom alongside Jess and show her the ropes.
ESCADA II was first of my string to go in her first BE100 she produced a much better test to score 33.5. She has heaps of ability and this is merely scratching the surface of the scores she is capable of. She then went on to jump a very classy double clear picking up a handful of time faults due to me not pushing her as she hasn't really got any experience of xc!! She was an absolute dream xc taking it all in her stride.
NASEBY performed one of his better tests to score 32.5 he then jumped a fab double clear in the time to finish on his dressage score and pick up a 5th placing. Sadly he is for sale purely because he belongs to me.
SPRINGTIME ORLA has returned after 4yrs away from my yard. She is sadly for sale and has come back due to some issues showjumping. She has so far jumped 3 double clears at BSJA being in the money every time and then at West Wilts performed a workmanlike test, (that the judge didn't approve of) had a very unlucky pole sj and I had an incredible ride xc having not xc schooled her beforehand. She is one of the best i've sat on xc, taking on all her fences and staying dead straight at skinnies. She goes in all three phases in a snaffle and is very straight forward. If anyone is looking please don't hesitate in contacting me.
BLACK EYED PEA II did an average test and had a silly 4 faults sj. Xc he was giving me a great ride xc until the second last where he lost concentration and picked up a silly 20 penalties. I was cross with myself as much as him! His next event is Barbury where I will continue to ride to the finish line!
Frankie Swallow took her new horse to West Wilts too. Her test was marred by lacking concentration but jumped a good double clear to finish on it.

We returned to Summerhouse for some more BSJA. Orla jumped brilliantly for a 3rd placing in the 1.05m open she then had a pole in the jump off of the Newcomers (completely rider error). Ethel was not keen on the new bit I tried on her so the 1.05m open is best forgotten. However, back in her normal bit she jumped brilliantly in the Newcomers annoyingly having the same pole in the Newcomers as Orla (also rider error). She is super scopey and I love competing her. Blackie jumped a lovely double clear in the 1.05m open just missing a placing, he then took a couple of rails in the Newcomers.

With June over we now look forward to Barbury with Orla and Blackie followed by Upton House with Ethel and Jerry. I will of course be fitting in some showjumping in between to keep them on their toes.

START OF THE SEASON UPDATE

I have been extremely busy hence my complete lack of updates...I will try much harder to keep you all up to speed on what's happening here at LME.

JANUARY
Black Eyed Pea II was fantastic in the JAS at Hartpury and finished 3rd in the BE100 with the best style mark of the day.

FEBRUARY
With this month being so disgustingly wet, we tried as best we could to prepare for the fast approaching event season...

MARCH
We headed off to start the season at a postponed Aston Le Walls with NASEBY and BLACK EYED PEA II. Blackie did a nice test and jumped a fabulous double clear, sadly I had to run him slowly due to the ground conditions. Jerry was slightly harshly marked in the dressage and jumped an immaculate clear sj. I decided not to run him xc as the ground was too deep and holding. Aston did very well to run this event with the weather in the run up to it being horrendous!

All the other events I entered in March were all cancelled so sadly we were looking at a very slow start to the year.

APRIL
We headed off to Ascott Under Wychwood (one of my favourite events). Again I took Blackie and Jerry. Blackie did a good test and performed a lovely double clear finishing just outside the placings. Jerry was quite excited to be out and scored 36.5, he had a very unlucky pole and gave me a great ride xc. All in all a good educational day.

Next stop was Broadway with PENCARDER SILVER STORM, NASEBY and BLACK EYED PEA II. Rosie was very happy to be out and did everything possible to irritate me in the dressage. She was lucky to be given what she got, she then had an unlucky pole and stormed around the xc clear, although she was very annoyed that I wouldn't let her out of 3rd gear! Jerry scored a very pleasing 29.5 in the dressage, had 2 down but annoyingly twisted a shoe which could have been the reason for him not jumping to the best of his ability. I withdrew him before xc as he was foot sore. Blackie produced a beautiful test and was marked very harshly. He jumped a classy double clear and was one of the fastest xc. He finished 4th in a competitive novice section.

2014

Lots has happened since my last blog....

MARMITE has been sold to a lovely home just 500yds from our gate. He will be out eventing with Tori this season. He is a fantastic little horse and we still see him every week for lessons and out and about hacking.

Anya has been hunting her horse Bean over the winter. He has been going very well, and Anya has been having lots of fun with him.

Christmas we had planned to have a quiet time leaving a few of my eventers out in the fields, however, this was not to be with an emergency phone call to help out a fellow eventer and have two of his to stay...so much for a quiet time. We had a fantastic Christmas party at The Greyhound in Bromham. This was well attended and was thoroughly enjoyed by owners and very important team members (yard staff, farriers, vets, parents etc).

The St. Mary's ponies have now returned. We have two new faces in Polo and Buddy and hopefully Toddy will find a fab new home where he will have as much fun as he did with Sylvia. Sparky has also returned and is looking and going very well, hopefully this continues in the arena competing which starts next week.

Bailey's Horse Feeds nutritionist, Lorna came to the yard this week and looked at all the horses. She thinks they are all looking fantastic, great coats, condition and topline. Thank you so much to Baileys, who i have now used for 10yrs. They have transformed the way my horses look and go and I will never be feeding anything else. Great sponsor!

We have a new arrival..... HEY ARNOLD has arrived. He is a 4yo bay shetland, standing at 8.3hh, who I have rescued from the Blue Cross. He is a lovely little character and has settled in very quickly. He will be coming on the lorry to some of the events to keep the big boys and girls company. He will no doubt be getting lots of attention as he is mega cute. Jane and Ian (my landlords) have made him the perfect stable with a mini door, lowered waterer, haynet ring and feeder. He is totally spoilt and a complete time waster!

DAUNTSEY PARK

PENCARDER SILVER STORM was competing here, in the intermediate, as her last event of the season. She performed her best test to date scoring 37.7. She was jumping a good round sj until the treble where she seemed to get stuck in the mud which was quite tacky. Sadly she had 2 parts of the treble down which she didn't really deserve. XC she was absolutely flying and was feeling rather full of herself taking the odd stride out which at an intermediate sized fence is quite scary! However she is more than capable.

We came to the double of corners which had caused problems all day, I was going the straight route...she jumped in over the first one bold...

Maybe a touch too bold... then she made up too much ground between the two corners and left her off fore leg on the fence...

Twisted...

and went splat...

Luckily she is very careful and managed not to go right over me, just led on my left leg. Luckily both of us are absolutely fine and I think she may be a little less cocky next time out!! She will now have a good winter rest and we will try and improve her dressage over the winter months.

BLACK EYED PEA II was doing the open BE100. He got stung just before his test and went mad. Luckily I just about got his brain back on the job before we went in. He did a nice test scoring 29. He then jumped a very confident double clear picking up just 3.6 time which left us in 7th position.

NASEBY was doing the BE100. he did a good test scoring 31.5, I saw a bad shot to one fence sj resulting in him having a pole down. Xc he was giving me a fantastic ride until 2 from home where he couldn't take his eyes off all the people on the bank opposite, sadly this resulted in him not going any further, which doesn't reflect how good he had been.

HARTPURY NSEA

Huge congratulations to Sylvia Rutherford who won the 80cm class at the schools Jumping and Style competition on Saturday at Hartpury, she represented St Mary's, Calne. Sylvia jumped a classy clear on her super pony "Hot Toddy" resulting in her winning the class which had 131 competitors in it. She also jumped clear in the 90cm narrowly missing out on a placing. Well done Sylvia and Toddy.

NEW FACES ON THE YARD

BALLYBEG PLEASURE
I have been bought "Ed" by Barbara Whale and Gareth Powell. He is a 4yo Irish Sports Horse and is bred to event. He has lots of presence and elevated natural paces. He is also proving to be bold and scopey. As with most youngsters he also has some natural flare (not all of it welcomed) but I am very excited about his future.

HIO LUCKSWELL
I bought a 4yo project that caught my eye whilst out horse shopping. "Marmite" is a 15.3hh, coloured Irish Sports Horse gelding. He is an absolute poppet and has taken everything is his stride. He has been xc schooled, is jumping fillers etc show jumping and works in a natural outline. He really is too good to be true. We have taken him cubbing with a 50+ field out with the Beaufort and he was admired by all for his striking looks and his immaculate behaviour. Sadly as a project Marmite is for sale. Please give me a call if you want to know more 07941 865688

STONAR ISODE

The St Mary's girls from Bosmere did fantastically well at the recent Stonar ISODE. Sylvia Rutherford riding Hot Toddy was in the 80cm, she performed a good dressage scoring 36, she then went on to perform a double clear and finished inside the time.Sylvia ended up in a credible 8th position. Her team also did well to finish in 3rd position.

The following day Frankie Swallow riding Voyagers Sovereign performed a very good test scoring 28, she also went on to jump a double clear and finished inside the time. Frankie was individually 3rd and her team also finished 3rd.

Flora Guy riding Ballymore Charles did a credible dressage scoring a personal best of 37. Flora also jumped a double clear and collected a few time faults. This was a great result for Flora who is relatively new to competing at this level.
